When it comes to sex in general, most people are used to the idea of performing. I think it comes from the consumption of porn. The media feeds into this trope as well in referencing sexual engagement as a performance. A lot of times people come to sexual experiences with an idea of what sex is supposed to look like, then they feel that they have to perform, especially if what their ideas around sex looking like involves things that they don’t normally gravitate toward or techniques that they aren’t really good at. They feel like they have to put on another personality and pretend and kind of just fuck [their way] through it, or [they’re] showing up to put on the theatrics. I find that people with vulvas or vaginas, especially if they’re not enjoying it, feel like they still have to moan, they still have to put on the face and do all the extra theatrics for the sake of feeding into their partner’s pleasure.
